Tragedy in Ojodu Berger: Four-Story Building Collapses, Many Feared Trapped as Rescue Efforts Continue

A fresh wave of sorrow has hit Lagos this morning, as a four-storey building under construction came crashing down in the Ojodu Berger area, precisely on Oremeta Street, in the early hours of April 19, 2025.

The building, which was already partially completed, was reportedly housing the well-known EqualRight Restaurant, making the collapse even more devastating as staff, early morning customers, and construction workers were caught unaware. The collapse happened around 8 a.m., throwing the entire neighborhood into chaos.

According to eyewitnesses, dozens of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble, with fears that some lives may have been lost. Rescue operations are currently ongoing, led by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), supported by local residents, police, and other emergency responders.

One resident described the building as a “bomb waiting to explode,” alleging that there had been previous warnings and visible signs of poor structural integrity. “We’ve been saying this building no strong from day one,” another witness told reporters on the scene.

As of now, authorities have not confirmed the number of casualties, and investigations into the cause of the collapse are yet to be officially announced. However, this tragic incident has reignited concerns over the alarming frequency of building collapses in Lagos, often linked to substandard materials, lack of proper oversight, and corruption within the construction industry.

The mood at the scene is tense, with onlookers praying and hoping for survivors as the rescue teams dig through the rubble.
